If you are going to discuss a topic academically do so critically, presenting all the information so people can make-up their own minds. I agree to a certain extent with the other reviewer (Zaid) when he says `The myth of Muslim tolerance' however I am a person who would not even like to label it under such a general title. I would prefer `The Myth of (the particular ruler of the period) tolerance', which is being far more honest. Are there no records of oppressive `MEN' throughout history in any country or in any religion? Or is this someone, having seen a market, just trying to make a buck by selling a book? Surely we have enough hate in the world! Here is a quote from the Koran. It is crystal clear.
"Allah does NOT forbid you to deal JUSTLY and KINDLY with those who did NOT fight against you on account of your religion and did NOT drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah LOVES those who deal with fairness (Surah 60: Verse 8)'
Just as in the Bible - in the Koran there are verses that state - an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth etc. In other words you can give as good as you get, but it clearly states you cannot go beyond that and there is a clause! - if you forgive, forget and treat your offender with gentleness and kindness you get a far greater reward from Allah!
How can this be a religion of violence?
I advise people to not rely on books written about Islam, but instead pick up the Koran and read it - make up your own mind - don't let others do it for you. You owe it to yourself not to have your thinking molded by someone else. I rated it one star - nice picture on the cover.1 stars (People with little background....) - I am quite alarmed by both this book as well as the reviews it has received. The book attempts to draw conclusions by assuming the conclusions are presumtively correct. There is little explanation of the concepts of dhimmi and jihad. Furthermore, extrapolating the beliefs of Arafat, a socialist and politician, as a prime example of modern Islamic interpretation is to profess a deep lack of knowledge of the religion. Also, taking Qur'anic verses out of context coupled with poor translations further complicates matters. Lastly, explaining historical occurences utilizing modern philosophical concepts and out of historical context is wrong.
That said, there is a lot of problems within the Muslim community, starting with ignorance of both the world and their own religion. This is coupled with a general paranoria, low self esteem, blatant propaganda, horrid socio-economic standards, lack of political and social fredom, and did I mention utter ignorance. There is a communal and individual lack of application by muslims of their professed beliefs coupled with their own mis-interpretaion and utilization of texts out of context. There is a lack of tolerance among many muslims, most noticable within the middle east.
To simply blame a religion based upon ignorant people's actions without utilizing an intellectual, knowledgable, and logical approach based upon the canons and foudational religious textbooks is incorrect. This title should be changed to: The myth of Muslim tolerance, since it is not a discourse of the canonical or textual basis of islamic tolerance. Rather, it is a discourse on the lack tolerance by muslims. 5 stars (Revealing, informative and often disturbing. Essential reading.) - Having recently acquired Robert Spencer's most recent work entitled "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam ..." in addition to his study "Islam Unveiled ...", I was hesitant as to whether this book would be able to provide me with any more relevant information upon Islam.
However, having accessed the vast amount of information contained in this book I am personally glad that I took the time to make this additional purchase.
As already described by others, much of this study consists of a considerable array of articles/essays by a number of knowledgeable and learned people with much experience of Islam and it's many facets. A knowledge that emanates from the text of this well written and extremely easy to read investigation.
Rather than taking the personal opinions of the authors at face value, where possible I have personally taken the time to measure the context of the quotes from the Koran and their context, against those illustrated in the commentaries provided.
My prime concerns being the subjects of Islamic "tolerance" of non-Muslims as specified in the title, and it's parallel issue of being a "peaceful" religion. I found the results of my analysis to be both informative and illuminating.
The book proceeds to cover many aspects such as the alleged "oppression of Middle East Christians", the "persecution of Jews and Christians under Islam", "Jihad and human rights", the strength of "Islamism" at the United Nations and an article labelled "Judeophobia Today = Anti-Judaism/Anti-Zionism/Anti-Semitism; A growing culture of hate".
The latter issue, for example, alleges that under an increasing "Judeophobia" and the purported guise of "anti-Zionism", a "culture of hate" is seeping into Europe and the West.
(For those interested in a further study on this particular issue I would respectfully recommend the book entitled "Eurabia; The Euro-Arab Axis" by Bat Ye'or.)
An article is even provided which addresses the establishment of CAIR (Council of American-Islamic Relations) and their described agenda of "promoting a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America".
The latter being cited as necessary due to the perception that "misrepresentations of Islam are most often the result of ignorance" by non-Muslims. This subject is addressed in some depth and makes interesting reading.
Attention is also paid to how alleged Islamic "intolerance" and fundamental beliefs allegedly underlie the Arab-Israeli conflict itself, where it is emphasised herein that solving the conflict in the Middle East does not depend upon the "cession of land".
The underlying "hostility" pertaining to the Jews is cited as being "appalling" and being described as a reflection of the ideology engendered by Jihad throughout the ancient Muslim conquests of lands populated by Christians and Jews on the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe. Reference also being made to the historic treatment of these populations under Islamic rule.
Indeed, the variety and number of subjects addressed in this work is impressive in it's own right and all are provided with a considerable list of references.
As with the other titled Islamic studies from the same source mentioned earlier, many will perhaps find the contents to be contentious or even offensive.
To those readers I can only recommend that the views expressed here be thoroughly examined by the individual reader by taking into account the references and sources provided herein, together with any independent information that may be deemed relevant.
I can but personally commend and endorse this book for it's depth and scope. A study which I consider to be essential reading at this time. This is the Hardcover version.
